Plans & Billing: Upgrading, Downgrading, Trials, and Cancellation

Last updated on 06 Jul, 2026

EG is billed through Shopify's standard app billing, so every charge, trial, and cancellation is approved by you inside Shopify β€” EG never charges your payment method directly. This article explains what each plan includes, how the 5-day trial works, what happens when you upgrade or downgrade, and what to expect if you cancel.

1. Plan comparison

EG has two paid plans β€” Standard and Unlimited β€” each available monthly or annually, plus a free trial (see below). Prices are shown monthly, with a discounted annual option on every plan.

Plan

Monthly price

Annual price

Active rules

Highlights

Standard

$14.99/mo

$149.90/yr

Up to 3 active at a time

Basic rule triggering, minor customization, action-product stock alerts, basic support.

Unlimited

$29.99/mo

$299.90/yr

Unlimited

Advanced rule triggering, advanced rule targeting, higher level of customization, action-product stock alerts, product page redirections, priority feature requests, premium support.

Paying yearly instead of monthly saves you roughly two months' cost on every plan (for example, Standard is $149.90/yr instead of $179.88/yr if paid monthly).

2. The 5-day free trial

New subscriptions to EG's Standard plan start with a 5-day free trial, run through Shopify's billing system.

What happens:

  1. When you first try to activate rules, you'll see a "Get started" screen summarizing your subscription: the plan name, price, and a reminder that your free trial starts immediately.

  2. Selecting Start 5-day free trial takes you to Shopify's own charge-approval screen, where you confirm the subscription. You are not charged at this point.

  3. Your trial end date is shown on this screen. You will not be billed until that date.

  4. You can cancel any time during the 5 days at no cost.

What happens when the trial (or any paid subscription) ends without an active plan: if you don't have an active subscription β€” because a trial lapsed without payment, a charge was declined, or you've cancelled β€” EG stops serving rules to your storefront. Customers will no longer see gift-with-purchase offers, banners, or popups. Your admin dashboard keeps working: you can still log in, view your rules, and manage settings, and reactivating a plan will start showing your active rules again immediately.

3. Monthly vs. annual billing

At the top of the Plans page you'll find a Monthly / Yearly toggle that switches the prices shown for every plan.

To switch your existing subscription's billing interval (for example, from monthly to annual on the same plan):

  1. Toggle to the interval you want.

  2. Your current plan will show a Select button (instead of "Current plan") whenever the toggle doesn't match your active billing interval.

  3. Selecting it takes you through Shopify's charge-approval screen again to confirm the new interval and price.

Because this creates a new subscription charge, Shopify will ask you to approve it just like an upgrade β€” you'll see the new price and interval before confirming.

4. Upgrading your plan

  1. Go to the Plans page in EG.

  2. Choose the Monthly or Yearly toggle for the price you want.

  3. Click Select on the plan you want to move to.

  4. You'll be redirected to Shopify to approve the new charge. Once approved, you're returned to EG on the new plan.

If the upgrade button doesn't respond: if you're on the Design page with unsaved style changes (for example, an edited popup or banner design), EG blocks the upgrade redirect and shows your save bar instead. This is intentional β€” it protects your unsaved design work from being lost mid-redirect. Save or discard your changes first, then try upgrading again.

5. Downgrading your plan

Downgrading from Unlimited to Standard can turn off some of your existing rules, because Standard supports fewer active rules and fewer advanced features. EG shows a warning before you confirm a downgrade so you know what to expect.

When downgrading to the Standard plan, rules are automatically paused if they:

  • Push your number of active rules above 3 (Standard's limit), or

  • Use features that require Unlimited, such as:

    • Collection-based triggers

    • Product-tag triggers

    • Advanced targeting (anything other than "all customers/products")

    • Specific product-combination triggers

    • Cart value rules that exclude certain product variants

    • Gift/reward actions offering more than 6 product variants at once

Choosing which rules stay active: EG doesn't let you hand-pick which rules survive a downgrade in advance β€” the system automatically keeps up to 3 rules active on Standard, prioritizing rules that already use only Standard-compatible features. After the downgrade completes, go to your Rules list and review what's active. You can manually turn rules on or off (up to your new plan's limit) to choose exactly which ones run on your storefront.

To downgrade:

  1. Go to the Plans page and select the lower plan.

  2. If any of your active rules would be affected, a "Downgrading to the [Plan] Plan" confirmation modal appears explaining what will be paused.

  3. Click OK to confirm, or Cancel to back out and review your rules first.

  4. You'll be taken through Shopify's charge-approval screen to confirm the new (lower) price.

6. Development stores are free

If your store is a Shopify development, partner sandbox, staff, or affiliate store, EG automatically marks any plan as free for you β€” you'll see "FREE for Dev Stores" next to the plan price and won't be charged. This makes it easy to fully test EG before going live.

7. Subscription discount codes

If EG support has given you a subscription discount code:

  1. On the Plans page, open the discount code field (this appears automatically if you followed a link with a promo code, or you can request one from support).

  2. Enter your code and click Apply.

  3. If the code is valid, a confirmation dialog shows you the discount percentage, which plan and billing interval it applies to, and how many billing cycles it lasts.

  4. Click Activate Discount to continue β€” you'll be redirected through Shopify's approval screen to confirm the discounted subscription.

Discount codes have a usage limit and an expiration date; EG will tell you if a code has already been used up or has expired.

8. Cancelling your subscription

  1. On the Plans page, find the "Do you want to cancel your EG subscription?" card (this only appears if you're on a paid plan).

  2. Click Cancel subscription.

  3. A confirmation dialog explains the consequence: cancelling stops EG from running on your store, meaning any currently active rules will stop showing to customers.

  4. Click Continue to cancel to confirm, or Back to keep your subscription.

After cancelling, EG stays installed on your store, but no rules will run on your storefront until you resubscribe. Your rules, settings, and history are preserved β€” nothing is deleted. Rules that use an EG automatic discount are paused (and their discounts deactivated) as part of cancellation, so after resubscribing, check your Rules list and reactivate any of those you still want running. You can still access the EG admin at any time to review or edit your setup.

9. Reinstalling and trial eligibility

If you uninstall EG and reinstall it later, whether you get a fresh 5-day trial depends on how long the app was uninstalled:

  • Reinstalling within 60 days: you will not see the trial start screen again, and you won't receive a new free trial β€” you'll go straight to Shopify's standard charge approval using your remaining (likely already-used) trial allowance.

  • Reinstalling after 60+ days: you're treated as a new install for trial purposes and will see the trial start screen again, giving you a fresh 5-day trial.

Common questions

Will I lose my rules if I downgrade? No β€” your rules aren't deleted. Rules that don't fit your new plan's limits or features are paused (turned inactive), not removed. You can review and reactivate compatible rules at any time within your plan's limits.

Does upgrading take effect immediately? Yes, once you approve the new charge in Shopify, EG switches your plan and unlocks the new limits/features right away.

Why can't I click "Select" to upgrade or change my plan? If you have unsaved changes on the Design page, EG will show your save bar instead of proceeding, so you don't lose the changes. Save or discard them, then retry the plan change.

I'm on a discount code β€” why does the price look different? If your store has an active subscription discount code, the Plans page shows a banner explaining the discounted price and how long it lasts. Once the discount period ends, your subscription reverts to the plan's normal price.

Do development/test stores get billed? No. Development, partner sandbox, staff, and affiliate stores are automatically treated as free across all plans so you can test without charges.

What exactly stops working if my subscription lapses? Only the storefront-facing side of EG (gift offers, banners, popups) stops showing to your customers. Your EG admin dashboard, rules, and settings remain accessible so you can review everything before resubscribing.
