How EG Rule Geotargeting Works

Updated 1 week ago

Merchants on the Unlimited plan (and above) can apply geotargeting to their rules.

Geotargeting lets you:

  • Target customers in specific countries

  • Exclude customers from certain countries so they can’t trigger a rule

How Geotargeting Works

EG geotargeting is powered by data from the Shopify window object.

  • Specifically, it looks at the country key, which holds the two-letter ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code (for example, in the screenshot below, GB for the United Kingdom).

  • This country value comes from your store’s localisation settings, which depend on:

    • The country selected by the customer in the country selector (if enabled).

    • Your shop’s default country, if no selection has been made.

EG then applies the geotargeting logic you’ve set for your rule.

Important Note

Geotargeting only applies before checkout.

  • Example: If a rule is set to only work in the USA, and a customer triggers it on the storefront, the rule will apply.

  • But if that customer changes their address to Canada at checkout, the rule will not be reversed.
